Mac Demarco Chamber Of Reflection lyrics & video: Spend some time away Getting ready for the day Upon again Spend some time alone Understand is on your run With a better man A. Lyrics to 'Chamber Of Reflection' by Mac DeMarco. Spend some time away / Getting ready for the day / You're born again / Spend some time alone / Understand that soon you'll run / With better men / Alone again.
My first case study, obviously from the title, will be of Mac DeMarco's 'Chamber of Reflection'. The track was released in 2014 as track number nine off his album 'Salad Days', and although wasn't the most popular track off the album, it sparked my interest the most and heavily influenced the genre of music I started listening to, and in turn influenced the style of music I enjoy making. The bpm of 'Chamber of Reflection' is 131, the chords throughout the piece are quiet unusual, consisting of A7m, B7m, Cmaj7, A7m, B7m, Em, and E7m (UltimateGuitar, 2015). The bpm I found online and checked via Abletons Tap to Tempo feature, and the chords were checked by playing them on guitar with the song. The chords for the song are quite unusual, and looking at these chords and listening to similar songs, I decided on D#m, C#, G#, and B as the main chord progression for my project 1 piece.
The structure is also heavily synth-based, allowing large gaps between the vocals for the synths to be heard. As seen below, there are many bridges where the vocals are not present, and synth layers are focused on. The instrumentation is also minimal, compared to the multiple guitar layers he has on many other tracks of Salad Days.
This leads me to believe the heavy emphasis on synth layers and creating an ambient kind of vibe make the lead synth the 'star of the plate'. This is also the most interesting part of the track, as it is actually a sample of a 70's pop track by Shigeo Sekito 'The Word II'.
The sample is evident throughout the track, and DeMarco has seemed to edit the sample into a heavier synth sound. Once DeMarcos track gained popularity, it was then sampled by Wiz Khalifa on 'Smoke Chambers' in 2014. Another element of the track, although it's not the 'star', I believe helps create the ambient and relaxed vibe of the track is the heavy reverb of DeMarco's voice throughout the piece, as it adds to the ambient and reverbed chordal synth. This leaves room for the main sampled melodic synth to be prominent and the main feature of the track.
Mac DeMarcos most successful songs have been his guitar heavy ones such as 'Salad Days' and 'Freaking Out The Neighbourhood', but 'Chamber of Reflection' is completely different to the two, lacking the prominent electric guitars. This prompted me to do research into the music he feels influenced him work.
In the documentary 'Pepperoni Playboy', published by Pitchfork, Mac gives insight into his process of producing, and his influences when creating Salad Days, which was often 80's pop. In an interview with the Guardian, he shares his Top 5 favourite tracks, all from between 1965 and 1986 (Fox, 2015). This is evident in this track, as the lead synth is sampled from a 70's song, and the ambience and retro-synths reinforce this.
The gain structure are stereo balance of this piece are interesting and specifically set up so that the sampled synth can be present and the star, and the other synths are much lower in volume allowing that to 'star' where it is present (evident in bridge sections, see above timeline) , while in the verses when DeMarco sings, the low volume of all the other elements leaves room for his vocals to be clear and drawn out with the heavy reverb (evident in verses, see above timeline).
Because of the digital elements for the instruments in the piece, I wondered if the drums were analogue or digitally made. He shows his process in the documentary of using synthesizers and MIDI keyboards for a similar song from Salad Days called 'Passing Out The Pieces'. Although they are clean and precise like quantized MIDI drums would be, throughout his documentary (linked above), live drum kits are present in his 'bedroom-studio'.

Although through research I couldn't find an exact answer in how the drums were made, it is safe to guess they would be an analogue kit. DeMarco has successfully blended analogue and digital elements in 'Chamber of Reflection', and is it evident DeMarco and the engineer carefully manipulated elements of the song to create a retro and ambient vibe, particularly through the choice of sample and heavy reverb.
The basic layers of the synth and heavy emphasis on reverb influenced my Project 1, and inspired me to use a 'real' sounding drum kit through MIDI rather than an obviously electronic kit. We didn't use as much reverb on the vocals in our project, as we felt it didn't suit the vocalists style of signing, but we did opt for a similar sounding lead synth in the track, you can listen here.
